Most CCTV quotes start with a number of cameras and a package price. That is backwards. A four-camera system placed well will out-perform an eight-camera system placed badly, and it will cost less. The useful question is not how many cameras you can fit, but which specific views you need to be able to rely on when something actually happens.
This guide walks through the decisions in the order they matter, so you can read a quote critically rather than comparing prices on hardware you have not chosen yet.
Start with the views, not the cameras
Walk your property the way an intruder would. Where would someone come in? Where do they have to pass through, whatever route they take? Those choke points — the gate, the main door, the side passage, the stairwell — are where cameras earn their keep.
For a typical home this usually lands on four to six positions: the gate, the front door, the rear approach and one wide view of the compound. Businesses add the billing counter and the stock room. Everything beyond that is refinement, not foundation.

Identification versus observation
This is the distinction that separates useful footage from footage that only tells you something happened. A camera set wide enough to watch a whole courtyard will show you a person crossing it. It will rarely show you a face clearly enough to identify anyone.
So decide per position: is this camera here to observe activity, or to identify a person? Identification views need a narrower field of view and a shorter distance to the subject. In practice that means at least one camera aimed deliberately at head height where people enter — a gate or a doorway — rather than a general wide angle from a roof corner.
Camera bodies, briefly
The body shape matters less than placement, but it does matter. Dome cameras sit flush and discreet, which suits shops and receptions. Turret cameras have the lens in an open ball-and-socket mount, which avoids the infrared glare you can get off a dome cover and makes them the practical outdoor pick. Bullet cameras are built for distance along a driveway or boundary, and their visible shape is a deterrent in itself.
PTZ cameras pan, tilt and zoom under control and can auto-track motion. They are excellent on large sites with someone actually watching, and largely wasted on a home, where a fixed camera pointed at the right place beats a moving one pointed somewhere else at the critical moment.
Resolution, and why more is not always better
Higher resolution gives you more detail to zoom into, but it also consumes more storage and more bandwidth. Jumping every camera to the highest available resolution is a common way to inflate a quote without improving outcomes.
A sensible pattern is to spend resolution where identification matters — the gate, the entrance — and accept lower resolution on general observation views. That gets you usable evidence where you need it, and keeps retention affordable everywhere else.
Storage is a retention decision
How long you can look back is set by disk size, camera count, resolution and frame rate together. Most homes want somewhere between 15 and 30 days, which covers the common case of noticing something days after it happened — a missing item, a damaged gate.
Recording on motion rather than continuously stretches the same disk substantially. The trade-off is that badly tuned motion detection can miss the beginning of an event, so this is worth setting up carefully rather than leaving on defaults.
Night and weather performance
Most incidents happen in the dark, so night performance is not a secondary spec. Check that outdoor cameras have infrared illumination adequate for the distance they are covering — a camera watching a 30-metre driveway needs far more than one watching a porch.
On the Kerala coast there are two additional realities. Driving monsoon rain demands genuinely weather-rated housings, and salt-laden air corrodes cheap mounts and housings quickly. Specifying for the climate costs a little more upfront and saves replacing hardware in two years.
Questions worth asking any installer
- Which of these cameras are for identification, and which for observation?
- How many days of footage will this configuration actually retain?
- What is the infrared range, and has it been checked at the real distance?
- Is the cabling concealed, and is the recorder somewhere secure?
- What happens to remote access if my internet provider changes?
The short version
Pick the views first. Make at least one of them an identification view. Size storage to the retention you actually want. Specify for night and for the coast. Then, and only then, compare prices — because at that point you are comparing the same system rather than two different ones with the same camera count.
