What this actually is

Automated lighting is less about novelty than about removing small daily frictions — the switch you always forget, the corridor you cross in the dark, the outdoor lights nobody turns off until morning. Done properly it is invisible: lights behave sensibly on their own, and the ordinary wall switch still works exactly as everyone expects.

    Deciding what to automate

    We walk the house and identify where automation genuinely helps — entrance and stair lighting, outdoor and security lighting, and rooms where scenes are useful. Automating everything for its own sake tends to annoy people.

    Choosing the control layer

    Control can sit in the switch module behind the plate, in the fittings themselves, or both. Modules behind the plate are usually the better retrofit because the existing switches and fittings stay exactly as they are.

    Installation

    Modules are wired into existing switch boxes, or new circuits are run where a rewire is already happening. Nothing on the wall needs to change visually, and manual switching keeps working throughout.

    Scenes and schedules

    We set up the routines that make it worthwhile — outdoor lights on at dusk, an evening scene, an all-off at the door — and configure the app and voice control before handover.

The choices worth understanding

Retrofit modules

Smart modules fit behind your existing switch plates, so the house looks unchanged and manual switches still work. This is the least disruptive route for a finished home and the one we recommend most often.

Smart switch plates

Replacing the plate with a touch panel gives a cleaner look and richer control at the wall. It suits new builds and renovations, where the switch boxes are accessible anyway.

Sensor-driven lighting

Occupancy and daylight sensors handle corridors, stairs, bathrooms and outdoor areas without anyone touching a switch. This is where automated lighting quietly saves the most electricity.

Straight answers

Do the normal switches stop working?

No. Every install we do keeps manual switching intact, which matters when guests, older family members or children use the house. The automation is an extra way to control the lights, not a replacement for the switch.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Local control keeps working — wall switches always, and depending on the system, the app on your home Wi-Fi as well. What you lose is remote control from outside the house and voice assistants that depend on the cloud.

Does my house need rewiring?

Usually not. Retrofit modules sit inside the existing switch boxes and work with your current wiring and fittings, which is why we lead with them. A rewire only comes into it if the existing wiring is unsafe or a renovation is already underway.

Will it actually reduce my electricity bill?

Modestly, and mostly through sensors and schedules rather than the switching itself — outdoor lights that turn themselves off, corridors lit only when someone is in them. Treat comfort and convenience as the main return, with savings as a bonus.
