What this actually is

A solar water heater is the cheapest solar you can buy, because heating water directly is far more efficient than generating electricity to do the same job. In Kerala's climate a well-sized system covers most of a household's hot water for most of the year, with an electric backup for the stretch of monsoon when the sun does not cooperate.

How the job runs

    Sizing for the household

    Capacity follows the number of people and their habits — roughly 100 to 150 litres suits a small family, scaling up from there. Oversizing wastes money and roof space; undersizing means cold showers on dull mornings.

    Roof assessment

    We check orientation, tilt, shading and structural capacity. A full tank is heavy, so the mounting has to be right, and a shaded collector performs poorly no matter how good the panel is.

    Installation and plumbing

    Collector and tank are mounted and plumbed into the hot water line, with the backup heating element wired in. Pipe runs are insulated, which is a detail cheap installs skip and which costs real heat.

    Commissioning

    We test delivery temperature, set the backup element sensibly so it only assists rather than doing the whole job, and explain the seasonal maintenance the system needs.

The choices worth understanding

Evacuated tube collectors (ETC)

Glass tubes with a vacuum layer, which hold their performance well on overcast days and cost less for the same capacity. This is the common choice across most Kerala installations.

Flat plate collectors (FPC)

An insulated glazed panel, more robust against physical damage and hail, and generally longer-lived. It costs more upfront and is the more durable long-term choice in exposed positions.

Backup heating

An electric element inside the tank covers heavy monsoon days and unusually high demand. Set on a timer rather than left permanently on, it fills the gaps without erasing the savings.

Straight answers

Does it work during the monsoon?

Partially. Evacuated tube collectors still gather useful heat on overcast days, but through a heavy Kerala monsoon you will lean on the backup element more. Sizing and expectations should be set with that season in mind, not the sunny months.

How much can it cut my bill?

Water heating is usually one of the largest electrical loads in a home, so replacing most of it with sunlight makes a visible difference. The exact saving depends on how much hot water you use and what you are heating it with today.

How long does it last, and what maintenance is needed?

A well-installed system runs for many years with little attention. Collectors need periodic cleaning, and in hard-water areas the tank benefits from descaling — which is why we ask about your water quality before recommending a system.

ETC or FPC — which should I pick?

Evacuated tubes give better value and cope better with dull weather, which suits most homes here. Flat plate is sturdier and tends to last longer, so it earns its premium in exposed positions or where durability outranks upfront cost.
